Endometriosis is a serious
and sometimes chronic condition where the tissue lining of the uterus migrates to or generates in other parts of the
body. The condition can result in serious health complications.
Endometriosis symptoms include:
- chronic pelvic pain in the lower abdomen
- painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
- abnormal or painful menstruation
- infertility or problems with fertility
- damage to other internal organs, primarily the intestines
and the bladder
Endometriosis is usually problematic in women who are
still in the reproductive years but it can occur after menopause. In rare instances, endometriosis can effect the prostate
in men who are taking high dose estrogen treatments.
Treatment of Endometriosis Symptoms
Tylenol, Advil, Nupren, Midol 200 and Medipren are usually
the first line of treatment in controlling pain. They are inexpensive and non-addictive. These are helpful for many women
with endometriosis.
If pain medications don't work, your doctor might prescribe
the birth control pill or the birth control injection called Depo-Provera. Birth control hormones are a widely used endometriosis
treatment.
If the above medications are not effective, Danazol
might be prescribed. Danazol is a drug that lowers estrogen levels and increases androgen levels. This puts the body in a
menopause-like state and can cause some male physical traits, as well. This medicine shrinks endometriosis growths and reduces
endometriosis pain for most women.
Another option is GnRH. GnRH is a hormone that regulates
a woman's menstrual cycle. GnRH analogs cause a woman to stop having a period. They produce a state that is similar, but not
identical, to menopause. Lupron Depot belongs to this class of drugs. |
