Depression can be caused by an imbalance of chemicals used by the brain as well as other factors. Unfortunately,
it is not something you can just "snap out of." Like any serious medical condition, depression needs to be treated by
a doctor.
Some people say that depression feels like a
black cloud over their lives. If you experience
symptoms for more than two weeks you might be clinically depressed. The symptoms you can share with your doctor that
might help identify depression include:
- decreased interest in usual activities or hobbies
- a change in sleeping patterns or difficulty sleeping
- feelings of worthlessness
- constant feelings of sadness
- lack of concentration
- feeling hopeless or guilty
- change in appetite
- loss of energy
- irritability
- tension
- weight loss or weight gain
- restlessness
- inability to make decisions
- thoughts of death or suicide
